Health

Giz believes that access to health care is a basic human right, and that a public health system is the best way to deliver these services.

Giz wants the importance of preventative health services to be recognised.

She also wants to see urgently needed additional mental health services to be provided through community organisations and the government.

Giz has:

  • exposed the lack of mental health services in the Perth metropolitan region through questions, letters to the Minister and motions in Parliament
  • supported Australia’s most advanced anti-smoking legislation, which has helped lower the national smoking rate to 16.6% (daily smokers)
  • supported alcohol and drug harm minimisation strategies
  • supported non-government health service provision
  • advocated for the recognition of multiple chemical sensitivity as a disease and an issue requiring urgent action
  • raised environmental health concerns at the Gingin Meatworks and the Dalyellup Waste Residue Disposal Facility
  • raised awareness about health risks of uranium mining and transport of nuclear waste through community workshops
  • raised health risks for prisoners during prisoner transport especially in remote WA through questions in Parliament and adjournment speeches
  • addressed health risks through genetically modified crops through moving and supporting two GM disallowance motions
  • contributed to the debate regarding the management of asbestos containing materials in WA state schools.
