Forests

I have been the Greens spokesperson on forests since late May 2009, as one of my 12 portfolios.
Since then I have done the following:

In Parliament:
- Moved a motion commenced by Hon Paul Llewellyn before his term ended that in the light of the declining rainfall and catastrophic decline in surface water inflow to our dams and the impact of salinity on our south west water catchments, the government implement as a matter of priority a comprehensive upper catchment recovery program based on farm forestry that aims to restore water and salt balance in the six key water catchments in the region
- Asked questions in Parliament regarding police using threat of reparations orders against protesters in Chester Forest and vigilante action taken against those protesters
- Asked questions via the Legislative Council’s Estimates and Financial Operations Committee regarding the Department of Environment and Conservation’s budget for sustainable forest management
- Asked questions in Parliament regarding the mid term audit of the Forest Management Plan
- Asked questions in Parliament regarding the Forest Products Commission including contracts, saw logs, strategic tree farming program and its annual report
- Spoken on motions regarding partial revocation of State forests.

( All of these are accessible via this link: http://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/web/newwebparl.nsf/iframewebpages/Hansar...
Use the search term “forest” and under Advanced Search/Member select my name.)

Outside Parliament:
- Written to the Minister for Forestry asking that Chester Forest be removed from the logging schedule or alternatively there be a moratorium pending independent evaluation of the forest
- Put in a freedom of information application to obtain a 2009 report reviewing the Forest Products Commission
- Written to the Attorney General and Minister for Police regarding apparent overuse of move on orders against protesters in Chester Forest
- Written a submission to the Sustainable Forest Management Division of the Department of Environment and Conservation regarding the 2010-2012 indicative timber harvest plans for native forests, urging that harvest not proceed at locations in the eastern jarrah forest, karri forest in low rainfall areas, young and maturing karri regrowth forest, and 15 coupes that I understand are particularly valued by their local communities
- Met with the Minister for Forestry regarding his intention to drop the Forest Products Commission’s strategic tree farming program. While those trees are young at present, there is concern that loss of this program will increase pressure to log native forests, in addition to their role in respect of salinity and carbon storage, not to mention employment in local communities
- Done media in relation to the loss of the strategic tree farming program.

Further questions in Parliament directed to the Minister for Environment (including questions re climate change) , and a motion in the Legislative Assembly for which I have prepared Adele Carles (the only Greens member in that House), are in the pipeline and will be accessible on Hansard (the same link as above).

I will continue to oppose logging of WA’s native forests and to support alternatives.
