SexualityGiz was the first openly lesbian parliamentarian in Australia and was instrumental in passing lesbian and gay law reform in Western Australia in 2002. Giz believes that discrimination on the grounds of sexuality or gender identity is unacceptable, and is proud of the improved equality that Western Australian gay and lesbian people now have before the law in WA. Giz believes that same-sex marriages and de facto relationships should have identical legal status to heterosexual relationships, and that same-sex couples should be entitled to the same superannuation and insurance benefits as heterosexual couples. Giz is an outspoken parliamentary advocate for the rights of lesbians and gays. She sought and secured government funding for lesbian and gay community services, parenting rights for same sex couples, and access to adoption and IVF. In August 2006 Giz made a written submission and testified in person before the 'National Inquiry into Discrimination against People in Same-Sex Relationships: Financial and Work-Related Entitlements and Benefits'. Listen to her statement (mp3) and read her submission (doc). |
