Giz is concerned that, despite the increasing appreciation in the community of the need to preserve urban bushland and wetlands, the Labor Government has presided over the continuing destruction of thousands of hectares of urban bush areas.

Giz wants a halt to clearing of bushland and wetlands within the Perth Metropolitan Region and the South West of Western Australia in line with the National Objectives and Targets for Biodiversity Conservation 2001-2005.

Giz has worked to protect urban bushland by

• successfully moving a disallowance motion in 2007 against the redevelopment of parts of Whiteman Park and against the rezoning of the Lake Karrinyup Golf Course
• calling on Commonwealth and State Environment Ministers to protect the Perth Airport Bushland from ongoing destruction
• lobbying against the re-zoning of the Burns Beach bushland for housing.
